Sourdough Hagelslag Bread

This Dutch tradition is enjoyed open face and is made from bread (we use sourdough), cold butter and chocolate sprinkles.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 slice sourdough bread
  • 1 TBS butter Kerrygold is a favorite
  • 1 tsp chocolate sprinkles De Ruijter brand is a must due to chocolate content (32%!)

Instructions
 

  • Select your favorite slice of sourdough bread.
  • Spread cold butter across the slice of bread.
  • Top with chocolate sprinkles, measuring with your heart!

Notes

  • Heat Exposure
Note, the Hagelslag sprinkles can melt when exposed to heat. If you reheat your sourdough bread previously stored in the freezer, the sprinkles may melt slightly as well if the bread is served hot.
  • Hagelslag Variation
  1. Fruit sprinkles aka ‘vruchtenhagel’
    -These sprinkles are assorted in color and include flavors like apple and lemon 
  2. Aniseed sprinkles
    -Aniseed sprinkles come in pink or blue color. This variation is commonly served in the Dutch community upon the arrival of a new baby to coordinate with the gender.
  3. Assorted sprinkles (aka fairy bread or unicorn bread)
    -This variation is commonly enjoyed at Easter
