adult and child rolling out dough with rolling pin.

The running joke in our family is sourdough is just like playdough for adults. And because of this our daughters love to play with sourdough any time we have a recipe they can roll on the counter.

Whether we are stirring up a recipe or frosting something, my little ones are hands on. They love “making a recipe” together and it’s one activity my little ones ask to do with me most frequently.

I love the fact the recipes we create are not only fun to make but nourishing and delicious. These are sourdough recipes kids love – and we do too because they are made from scratch!

The best part is my “job” as a sourdough recipe creator is taking inspiration from my kids cravings and turning them into something delicious and nutritious.

So sit back and enjoy these kid approved sourdough recipes!

Frequently Asked Questions

You bet they can! One of our children’s first foods is a the end of a loaf of sourdough bread or a nice piece of sourdough toast. Not only does homemade sourdough bread have a plethora of health benefits thanks to fermentation, when it is made from scratch there are no preservatives. A slice of tangy sourdough bread can also help to develop little ones’ taste buds. Just be sure to serve the bread in a form ‘approved’ by age.

With all foods, the size, shape and consistency must be correct for baby’s age and developmental milestones. Always refer to a child’s pediatrician for more information.

Ages 6MO – 9MO, bread should be toasted and served the size and width of two adult fingers. We like to serve a toasted end of the bread as the babies will naw on the bread rather than take off bites. Option to add butter for additional flavor.

Ages 9MO – 11MO, provide toasted bread in pieces – about the size of a thumb nail / blueberry.

Ages 12MO+, serve as desired.

Sourdough Brownies / Bars (#1-4)

If I had to describe sourdough brownies, I would say they are equal parts sweet and tangy! We love the versatility of these brownies and bars. Jazz them up or keep them simple – the choice is yours!

1. Sourdough Mummy Brownies

We love these sourdough brownies (which can be made without chocolate chips). They are fudgy and the sourdough discard intensifies the delicious chocolate flavor of these brownies. These brownies are “wrapped” in a cream cheese frosting or white chocolate. The googly eyes are edible, too!

2. Sourdough Brownies (Cocoa Powder Only)

The base for our sourdough brownies is one thing – cocoa powder! No chocolate chips needed. We love that this recipe can have chocolate chips stirred in or placed on top, but no chocolate chips need to be melted in order to achieve a fudge base. These brownies have a crackle top and are delicious when topped with chocolate frosting and sprinkles!

3. Frosted Sourdough Brownies (with sprinkles)

These sourdough brownies remind me of a Ghirardelli brownie. They have chocolate chips in the batter and are topped with a thick “crusting” chocolate frosting. We love to top these with sprinkles for extra crunch.

4. Sourdough Chickpea Blondies

vegan blondies.

There is nothing I love more than sneaking a little extra protein (and fiber) into our children’s diets. These chickpea blondies are extremely simple to make (throw everything in a blender) and are devoured within two days after making every single time.

Sourdough Donuts (#5-10)

We love a baked donut in this household. It’s probably due to the fact sprinkles can go on anything but no matter the flavor, you can not go wrong. Plus, all the donuts are baked – not fried- so they are healthy, right?! Some of the favorites are shown above and listed below!

10. Monster Donuts

These monster donuts are a not so spooky way to celebrate Halloween, or for any kid who loves monsters. The base is double chocolate and the icing is cream cheese- dyed naturally, of course. The edible googly eyes had us all loving the finished product.

Sourdough Muffins and Quick Bread (#11 – 13)

11. Sourdough Banana Mini Muffins

In a world where you can give a mouse a cookie, you can also give a moose a muffin! Cue the obsession with muffins. And if you can make them into a mini muffin size, what a game changer!

Whether you like your banana muffins with chocolate chips or by themselves, this recipe will not disappoint. Put those leftover bananas to good use.

12. Double Chocolate Sourdough Muffins

16. Sourdough Mac and Cheese Bites

These air fryer Mac and cheese bites are a great way to use leftover Mac and cheese. These bite sized Mac and cheese balls are filled with gooey cheese and noodles. They are slightly crispy on the outside thanks to their egg snd sourdough breadcrumb coating. A great addition to any meal rotation.

17. Sourdough Mozzarella Sticks
