Jump to RecipeThese sourdough cheesy garlic bread are so easy and delicious to make. They are full of garlic and lots of cheese – making the best pull apart cheesy bread. This cheesy bread goes along well with any meal and serve as a great appetizer for dinner.

It has been years since I have eaten Hungry Howie‘s cheesy bread – IE “Howie Bread” as I dealt with a gluten intolerance for over 14 years before I started eating sourdough and fresh milled flour. My husband has ordered it when the craving hits over the past few years.
I made this recipe because I was inspired by a thread on Reddit. And I was very pleased when my husband said these sourdough garlic cheesy bread were better than Hungry Howie’s!
True to their nature, they are made with a pizza dough, two types of cheese, and more garlic and butter on the top. These are truly delicious. And of course they are made with 100% sourdough starter plus no added yeast. Plus, there is no liquefied butter flavor (definitely not natural at all as it is never solid at room temperature…) in these like these store-bought alternative.
I love how our favorite sourdough pizza crust can be used in so many ways (like sourdough BBQ chicken pizza, sheet pan pizza, and pizza on the Traeger). You can even use the homemade sourdough pizza crust to make a savory monkey bread (IE cheesy pull apart bread made in a bundt pan).
And since I tend to bake in bulk and double my recipes to place the base in the freezer, this is one that I get look forward to when I just don’t know what to do with an extra half of pizza crust before dinner.
I hope you give these and try and enjoy them as much as our family does. We like served alone or with marinara sauce.

Ingredients for sourdough cheesy garlic breadsticks
There are a few key ingredients to this recipe, including sourdough, discard, garlic, salt, cheese, and salted butter. Free full list of ingredients and instructions visit the recipe card below.
- Sourdough discard: This recipe uses sourdough discard in place of commercial yeast. Make this recipe with either active sourdough starter or sourdough discard. I personally find sourdough starter to provide the most bubbly results in the bread.
- Garlic salt: Will you use the garlic salt grinder from Trader Joe’s. You’re just looking for something that can give you flaky garlic type spices. If you have garlic powder, that will be just fine, too.
- Cheese: The key to this recipe is having two types of cheese. Do you want a white cheese like mozzarella or an Italian blend and a cheddar cheese. This is the combination that hungry Howie’s utilizes on their bread and truly makes the flavors pop.
- Salted butter: Salted butter is important in this recipe because it is spread across the cheesy bread when it is removed from the oven. Not only does it elevate the exterior and make the bread more visually appealing, but I also provides additional flavor and moisture to the bread

Sourdough Pizza Crust (Prep)
- The night before you were going to make this recipe for an appetite or dinner make your pizza crust. We like to start ours around 9 PM so I can prevent on the countertop overnight and go into the fridge for a cold proof in the morning..
- Start together your salt, water, sourdough starter, oil, and honey. Mixed by hand and allowed to sit on the countertop overnight. In the morning, the dough may have doubled in size. Stretch and fold the dough over itself rotating the bowl with each repetition. Continue until the dough is no longer able to be stretched.
- Cover and place in the fridge until you are ready to bake. You can let this sit up to 72 hours before baking- the crust may be more tangy in flavor.
Toppings (Cheese + Garlic Butter)
- When ready to bake, preheat your oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. Remove the sourdough pizza dough from the fridge and place onto a sheet pan. Use your fingers to make a rectangular shape being sure not to pop any of the large bubbles. I like to dimple my fingers similar to focaccia to help spread the dough across the pan without rolling it out.
- Put the put the mozzarella cheese on first and cheddar cheese on top. Place on the bottom rack of the oven for 12 to 15 minutes or until the cheese has melted in the bottom of the pizza crust is a golden brown color.
- Remove from oven and immediately run your butter across the top of the cheesy bread. It is important to complete the step while the bread is hot so the butter can melt over the cheesy bread. Top with garlic salt and serve warm. We like to serve with marinara sauce or ranch.
